Eunice Newton Foote: 17th July

Eunice Newton Foote (Born 1819) was an American scientist, inventor, and women's rights campaigner.

She published the first paper by a woman to be read at the AAAS annual conference. The paper investigated the absorption of heat by CO2 and water vapor and hypothesizing that changing amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere would alter the climate. Published in 1857 this predated Tyndalls experiments by two years, but was mostly forgotten until the 1980s.

She was also an inventor, with many of her ideas patented by her husband, a common practice as women were not allowed to defend their rights in court.

She was a notable campaigner for womens' suffrage.

She was the mother of two daughters, who both published scientific material.

She died in 1888.
