Ferdinand von Zeppelin: 8th July

Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin (German: Ferdinand Adolf Heinrich August Graf von Zeppelin;born in  1838 ) was a German general and later inventor of the Zeppelin rigid airships.

One of the great legacies of the Zeppelin era are the postage stamps. (Linda Hall Library )

Von Zeppelin was an aristocrat and army general, but had studied science, engineering and chemistry in his 20's. His interest in dirigibles dates from his time in America as an observer with the Union army. After his resignation from the army 1891, he promoted and developed airships and built the first successful airship in 1900. His endeavours had only moderate success until the 1914-18 war, and he died in 1917. The heyday of airship travel ended with the loss of the Hindenburg (Luftschiff Zeppelin #129) in New Jersey in 1936.
